What are the Best Beaches in Bocas del Toro?
There are more than 20 beaches in Bocas del Toro and many are easily accessible thanks to the
archipelago’s robust network of water taxis and tour boats. So how do you pick which Bocas del
Toro beach you want to visit (or visit first)?
It all depends on personal preference. Some like convenient beaches near restaurants and bars.
Others want more secluded beaches away from any crowds. Other travelers would prefer a
completely undeveloped beach where they get the sand all to themselves. Still, others might pick
a beach based on the activities they have planned (beyond just sitting in the sand and soaking up
the sun, of course). Certain beaches throughout Bocas del Toro are best for wildlife watching,
snorkeling, surfing, and more.
Here are some of our favorite beaches in Bocas del Toro, along with a few details about what you
can expect at each.
Starfish Beach
Ask anyone about the best beaches in Bocas del Toro and you’ll hear about Starfish Beach. One of
the most popular, it’s gained a reputation as the place to go for exploring the super-clear waters
that are filled with large starfish. That said, because this beach is so popular and well-known, it
might be too crowded for some.
Bluff Beach
Bluff Beach is a great place for checking out the local wildlife and marine life, too, but the
specialty here isn’t starfish. Instead, it’s a turtle nesting habitat, as well as a place where you can
see monkeys, sloths, and more flitting between the palm trees. This is likewise a great surfing
spot; however, what makes it a good surfing spot is big waves, which makes it not a great fit for
swimming or snorkeling.
Red Frog Beach
Another beautiful beach, Red Frog Beach likewise has rougher waves at times, so be careful.
Despite this, Red Frog Beach is more developed than Bluff Beach, so you can take advantage of
sun lounger rentals, nearby bars and restaurants, and other amenities.
Wizard Beach
Wizard Beach is pretty remote, even though the historic and culturally significant settlement of
Old Bank is nearby. You’ll need to hike through the rainforest to get there, but once you do,
you’ll find you have plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy the sand by yourself.
Carenero Beach
Carenero Beach is one of the more convenient beaches to get to if you’re heading out of Bocas
Town. The small beach is on a small island by the same name and you can explore the entire
thing between enjoying bites to eat from the beachside restaurants and chilling beneath the palm
trees.
Islas Zapatillas
Okay, so this isn’t technically a “beach.” Instead, Islas Zapatillas is a set of two islands that sit
within the Bastimentos National Marine Park. However, the islands’ gorgeous shorelines give
them an inarguable spot on our list. Hop a boat from Isla Colon to get to either and enjoy the
fantastic snorkeling options around the coral reefs.
