Wondering what to do in Bocas del Toro? It’s a difficult question — and not because there’s a lack of things to do, but because there’s just so much to do.

When considering the archipelago’s 11 islands, approximately 50 cays and 200 islets, there are near-endless ways to have fun, whether you’re out for some adventure, prefer a bit of cultural exploration or just want to beach bum the day away.

However, if this is your first time visiting Bocas del Toro, there are a few things you’ll want to do, to ensure a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you won’t soon forget.

1. Sunbathe and explore some of Bocas del Toro’s best beaches.

It’s all about the beaches and water in Bocas del Toro. You’ll have plenty of beaches to choose from when planning your trip, so try to see and experience a few different ones.

Starfish Beach, for example, is known as a starfish habitat, so it’s perfect if you want to see some of the native marine life up close and personal.

Don’t care for the crowds? More remote and quiet beaches are accessible with just a short boat ride away, to one of the less developed islands.

2. Don’t just enjoy the views from the beach — get out into or on the water!

Scuba diving and surfing are the top water activities in Bocas del Toro. You’ll find near-endless options for both during a trip, with tour providers aplenty.

That said, if you’re not keen on either of these activities, you do have other options for getting out on or in the water. For example, you can go on a boating tour to see the archipelago by sailboat. You can also rent a kayak and paddle out on your own.

You can also go on boat tours that visit specific areas of interest, like Dolphin Bay, where you can reliably spot dolphin pods in the summer.

If you’re intrigued by the idea of scuba diving, but it’s just a little too intense for your preferences, you can also go half-way and try snorkeling! You’ll be able to check out plenty of marine life without any actual diving

 3. See what active adventures await inland.

Bocas del Toro’s ample opportunities for adventure hardly start and end at the ocean. You can also find adventure activities on dry land.

Go caving and see the bat colonies that live throughout Bocas del Toro, with guided tours at sites like Nivida Cave.

Spot other wildlife when you go on a wildlife-watching jungle experience or boat trip, from the native and tropical bird species on Bird Island to the monkeys and sloths you’ll see during a hike.

Or, go on an ATV tour, for something a little more high-speed. Prefer two wheels to four? You can also cycle your way around the island, with convenient bike rentals available in Bocas Town. You can also trade out your wheels completely and take a horseback riding tour.

4. Taste the local flavors.

Taste-test your way through the islands by sampling the regional cuisine.

In Bocas Town, check out the street vendors and small restaurants, for the local experience. Wherever you go, be sure to order the seafood; Bocas del Toro’s geography makes it a prime spot for some of the freshest seafood you’ll taste.

You can even enjoy some agritourism when you visit the farms that grow some of the produce that has historically put Bocas del Toro on the map. For example, there are several chocolate farms you can visit and tour (with samples, of course!).

5. Experience the nightlife.

Lastly, Bocas del Toro is not without its nightlife. Save up some energy during the day and then head out into Bocas Town to enjoy the bars, restaurants and music venues.
